What makes FORTIFY DEMOCRACY different: While others focus on resisting the current authoritarian regime, we're working toward permanent protection against authoritarian capture. By upgrading our electoral system for the 21st Century, we can future-proof it against would-be autocrats.

Our North Star is preventing authoritarian capture. Every reform we advocate for would minimize the chance that we’ll have to deal with existential threats to our democracy in the future.

THE FORTIFY DEMOCRACY APPROACH

APPROVAL VOTING: A superior voting system to the one we currently use. Voters can select as many candidates they want, with each selection carrying the same weight. This makes earning broad support the winning strategy, and mathematically minimizes the chances of extremist factions winning. Approval voting in our general elections would transform our politics by restoring accountability, incentivizing political parties to police their own ranks against corruption, and giving voters more and better candidates to choose from.

FINAL-FOUR NONPARTISAN PRIMARIES: Partisan primary elections are inherently undemocratic and incentivize candidates to appeal to a narrow base of voters. By opening up the primary process and allowing all voters to participate, we can push fringe candidates back to the fringes while advancing candidates who will work for their constituents.

THE PROOF: Alaska, St. Louis and Fargo prove these reforms work—voters get candidates they actually like instead of being forced to choose between the lesser of two evils.

NATIONAL POPULAR VOTE: The Electoral College is inherently undemocratic because it makes the value of a vote vary from one state to the next. Everyone’s voice should be equal, especially when it comes to choosing who becomes the president of the United States of America — the most powerful person on Earth!
